His Five Forces framework teaches us that profitability isn\u2019t just about your product \u2014 it\u2019s about the structural barriers protecting your industry. High margins? They\u2019re an invitation. Strong demand? A magnet. When capital spots an opportunity, it rushes in, driving up competition. This often eats into excess profits and can even turn a once-profitable industry into a loss-making one.<\/p>\n<p>Asian Paints &amp; its investors learnt this the hard way.<\/p>\n<h2>The \u20b910,000 Crore Invasion<\/h2>\n<p>When Grasim Industries \u2014 the Aditya Birla Group\u2019s heavyweight \u2014 announced its paint venture in January 2021, skeptics dismissed it. Asian Paints had survived decades of competition. The market\u2019s reaction? Sheer panic.<\/p>\n<p>On February 27, 2025, after Aditya Birla announced their plans &#8211; Polycab, KEI, and Havells plunged up to 20% in a single day. History is littered with industries where fat profits invited destruction:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/01\/business\/budget-airlines-ticket-prices.html\"><strong>U.S. Airlines (2000s):<\/strong><\/a> After years of consolidation and high fares, ultra-low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier undercut legacy players, turning a profitable industry into a margin battleground.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2012\/09\/03\/how-the-telecom-company-free-disrupted-the-mobile-landscape-in-france\/#:~:text=Imagine%20a%20mobile%20phone%20plan,it%20stayed%20lean%20for%20years.\"><strong>European Telecom (2010s):<\/strong><\/a> Free Mobile\u2019s entry in France demolished ARPUs, forcing giants like Orange into brutal price wars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/world-news\/china-solar-industry-faces-challenges-but-rock-bottom-prices-to-persist-124040300591_1.html\"><strong>Chinese Solar (2010s):<\/strong><\/a> Sky-high margins lured in hundreds of manufacturers, collapsing prices and bankrupting former leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The most brutal example in India? <strong>Reliance Jio.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Mukesh Ambani\u2019s Jio dropped free data and near-zero tariffs on an unsuspecting telecom market. Airtel, Vodafone and Idea bled billions. Profits vanished, and the industry consolidated to just a few players. Vodafone and Idea had to merge simply to survive.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson? Capital chases returns. And when it arrives, it doesn\u2019t ask for permission \u2014 it takes.<\/p>\n<h2>Investing in the Age of Disruption<\/h2>\n<p>The hard truth? Being a great businesses isn\u2019t enough. You need durable businesses. Ones that can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Withstand price wars<\/strong> (like Coca-Cola\u2019s brand dominance)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lock-in customers<\/strong> (Apple\u2019s ecosystem)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Control scarce resources<\/strong> (TSMC\u2019s semiconductor monopoly).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Asian Paints hasn\u2019t failed. It\u2019s still the category leader and may well remain so for years to come. But it wasn\u2019t as untouchable \u2014 or as invincible \u2014 as many investors believed. The mistake wasn\u2019t in the business. It was in the valuation. Investors simply overpaid for the company.<\/p>\n<p>In capitalism, no advantage lasts forever. The only constant?
